Apparently WCPT 850 AM will soon begin broadcasting Air America in Chicago. AAR was, of course, on in Chicago when they first started. And, after they were booted Evan Cohen even said that they'd be back.
This time around it's with a new station, so they just might make it. Now, the problem they'll have is with being heard.
WCPT is daytime-only and only 2500 Watts.
Comparing just energy output, many houses consume more energy. The run-down entry halls at some run-down Las Vegas casinos consume more energy. In fact, our government informs us that the energy consumption of 2100 households popping microwave popcorn in one year will exceed the yearly energy output of WCPT.
Details here. Barely rewritten press release here. The solution to Air America's problems? A government program mandating that all radios sold must have giant antennae. It could be rolled into the FCC's Fairness Doctrine.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I failed to check Yahoo Maps when I first posted this. Not only is this station just 2500 Watts, it's broadcasting from Crystal Lake IL, which is 50 miles northwest of Chitown. (Hat tip.)
For comparison purposes, WUSC-FM, "the student-run radio station of the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus" is also 2500 Watts. There might even be pirate radio stations broadcasting from international waters in Lake Michigan with stronger signals.

The fact that this site even exists shows that Air America is making the right wing uncomfortable.
If it really were irrelevant, why bother with
an anti Air America site?
Last morning coming down the stair
I saw a man who isn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh how I wish he'd go away!

I have no problem getting the signal and am DELIGHTED to have this access and alternative to the corporate drones right up the dial at WLS!
We love Air America - keep it coming because we're getting under their skin!!!

Long live Air America!

A note about CHicago geography (and mapquest, which I assume is this site's source for the "50 miles northwest" figure). The city itself is 25 miles long and approx. 10 miles wide. Border to border, the distance is more like 30 miles. Nevertheless, Crystal Lake is considered part of the "greater Chicagoland area" and up until the proliferation of fax machines, cell phones, modems, etc., was even within the same telephone area code.
For what it's worth, the station that plays O'Reilly here isn't "even in" Chicago either.
[BA responds: Yahoo maps shows it's 50 driving miles northwest of The Loop. For comparison purposes, it's 55 miles from downtown LA to Riverside, and 40 miles from Manhattan to Stamford, CT]

It's good to see the 'right' uncomfortable - keeps them on their toes and honest. I live in Chicago, and listen frequently - but mostly when Rush gets boring.
The signal is weak, and they probably reach 50% of the Metro area (remeber - that's about 12,000,00 people!).
While the rants and sophistry are juvenile, and Mike Malloy is a seriously sick dude, it's nice to see an outlet for their anger. And remeber -
'The best thing about free speech is it makes the idsiots easier to spot.'
