Today's New York Times / Air America Radio scandal

Remember the NYT article "They Look Nothing Like Rush Limbaugh", featured here in the post "New York Times finds new way to promote Air America"?

As it turns out, the idea for that article appears to have come from an AAR PR flack named Jamie Horn, who pitched the NYT on the concept. Details here. Additional comments here.

To be frank, there doesn't appear to be anything that overly underhanded here. I send emails to various source suggesting that they cover a story, and I'm sure that very many bloggers send links to their posts to other bloggers hoping they'd be linked.

Of course, in light of the NYT's obvious pro-AAR bias - including largely ignoring a major scandal at a source that they helped and continue helping to promote - this is a bit more than just the usual thing that PR people do. Would Limbaugh or Hannity have the same success at pitching their stories? I think not.

And, can't you just imagine the conversation in the NYT "newsroom" if Michael Savage wanted press? What would that result in? "Evil Right-Wing Hate Radio Hits Rock Bottom".

While the New York Times Ethical Journalism Standards Guide doesn't appear to directly address the issue, Section 134 does discuss potential "favoritism" conflicts related to arts and entertainment coverage. And restrictions against helping others promote "artistic, literary or other creative endeavors" apply, according to Section 135.

P.S. This site welcomes news tips from AAR insiders.

Is Randy Rhodes human? Do they change her batteries on a daily basis? Does she have a pull string at the back of her neck? Did George Soros create her some secret loony liberal lab in
Budapest? Does she ever come up for air? She
is a
wretched REPETITIOUS lying witch. She must have slandered at least 6 people the last 2 weeks.
I realize Air America's ratings are dismal, and
people are unaware of her perpetual B.S, but I can
cannot believe how she gets away with it.

You answered your own question.

No one knows nor cars who she is or what she says.

Rhodes is a lying hack. The crap she bloviates is lapped up by her few fans, known as the "Tinfoil Hat Brigade". I have never heard someone so ignorant of politics in my life, let alone someone with access to the airwaves. It's sickening.

Wow, you're not a pathetic O'Reilly clone at all.

Randi Rhodes says:she is fact based and never lies. Yet, she has been spewing endless lies these last few weeks. "Military interrogators fed Iraqi detainees to lions." "The military used napalm on Iraqi citizens." "Karl Rove goes to gay partys and has orgies with leather speedo wearing 350 lb. gay prostitutes." Pres.Bush is a blow monkey."If true why isn't CNN, FOX, The New York Times, Wash. Post. ect., reporting these stories. Bore America is supposed to monitor Air America???? If Limbaugh said half the lies Rhodes does , he would have people lined up around the block waiting to sue him.

Somebody needs to create a site "INSANE RANDI RHODES RANTINGS." Her hypocrisy is barf producing. Maybe the only people who listen to her, are dykes, gay men and mental patients strapped to their beds. Is she really 46 years old? She has the maturity of a twelve year old brat.
