Air America bailout: worth nothing? (a rebuttal)

[The following post is from "biff", a frequent contributor to the blog at democrats.org, who also posts under other names at DailyKos and other sites. This site distances itself from his remarks, but as part of our plea agreement is required to carry it.]

Well, it looks like Lyin' Balloney is up to his old tricks again, claiming that the sale of Air America is little more than an accounting scam and that AAR actually had zero value. First of all, I think this "lawyer" he talks about does'nt exist and is in fact Balloney himself. Sheldon Drobny is almost a lawyer, and he already gave his thoughts on the matter and he said it was a bad thing but he didnt say it was worth nothing he said it was worth something. Second of all, "nothing" is not "nothing", its something. Nothingness exists, as surely as something does. Third of all, even if what he says is true, they didn't have to pay someone to takeover Air America, so it's not like it was a negative amount or antyhing. Fourth of all, I've looked into this and I knoe he's wrong.

The Bush Crime Family and Rethugnantcons will say and do anything to drive liberal, progressive, and socialistic talk off the air. Keep a watchful eye peeled for their attempts to do that.

UPDATE: This site would like to make it perfectly clear that "biff"'s comments are his alone, and the mention of "democrats.org" above was only meant to identify another site where "biff" leaves comments (example). The word "comment leaver" should have been used instead of "contributor", and we would like to make it clear that "biff" is not associated with "democrats.org", "democrats.com", "dailykos.com", or the other sites where he and his aliases leave the occasional comment.

Baloney has somehow convinced NPR he is an authority on Air America and is scheduled to appear on their weekend show "On the Media." Join me in revealing who he really is to the producers of that (apparently clueless) show:

"His whole Radio Equalizer blogspot is nothing but an attack dog on Air America peddling phony ratings, rumours and relentless bombast to try to collapse AAR. Most of his "exclusives" do not pan out. He is one of a growing number of Young Republican dirty tricksters of the Abramoff, Rove, Reed years who are attacking progressive talk radio from all directions (seven websites I count) because it relentlessly debunks the bald-faced lies of the right wing talk radio juggernaut (which according to the Annenberg School studies dupes 50 million listeners at a time and swung the past 5 of 6 elections). The tissue of endless lies of right wing talk radio is so massive that sustained debunking of the type Air America and progressive talk does regularly threatens to collapse the whole false edifice."

Everything you just posted is a bald-faced lie, Greg. Aren't you the guy who got disciplined by Major League Basebell for dissing gays. Sounds like the same temperament.

Umm, its the crap that AAR contributors say that has driven themselves off the air, not what critics of them have said. Still no clue.

How come Al Franken NEVER came close in overtaking his nemesis; Rush Limbaugh? How come Keith Olbermann not only can't beat O'Reilly, but is getting his ass handed to him by Nancy Grace? Once again you guys fail to recognize that "Air-Hate America" is broke and heading to the dumpster that spawned it.

Hey, Greg, you wanna back this up with some facts and figures and links? I didn't think so. You lefties spend so much time trying to destroy the truth, and you can't prove your points, so we all have to believe every liberal screed is a universal fact so well known by the masses it doesn't need defending. You a funny guy!

Unfortunately he is right.

The new investor apparently loaned AAR 3.5 million after the bankruptcy filing. That cash infusion was burned thru in 3 to 4 months of continued operating losses and is now gone.

His purchase price included this 3.5 million that he had loaned them that was now gone. The only new money was the remaining 1 million.

It is kind of like putting more water into a pail with a hole in the bottom and expecting something new to happen.

As a general rule if something is worth money, investment firms, particularly in a bankruptcy proceeding will make a bid in order to get valuable assets at a bargain price while eliminating debt.

Whole companies are devoted to this practice and they have their ear to the ground to keep an eye out for this stuff.

The fact that they did not come out of the woodwork during this proceeding speaks volumes, its not as if the media didn't hype Air America for a long time.

Now if a rich person of the left chooses to finance the network and chooses to lose his own money doing so in order to allow a point of view he supports to get more exposure, then more power to him. It's his money and he has the right to spend it as he wishes. Since it will mean jobs to people who might otherwise get laid off, so much the better, they have families to support too.

This doesn't change the fact that Air America is not a winning or profitable brand. No amount of blaming the public, republicans or some grand conspiracy will make it otherwise.

Instead why not just be grateful that it has been bailed out and enjoy it if that is what you wish to do? If Maloney's argument can't hold water then it won't. If it can then no amount of raving will prevent it from doing so.

If the goal is to advance an idea then do so, and don't worry about the money. If the goal is to do so and make a viable business then either the business model, the product or the selling of the product needs to be modified.
