Air America Radio Year in Review 2007

Nothing really interesting happened on Air America Radio during 2007. So, I'll just go through the motions:

January
They went off in Columbus, Ohio. Jackie Guerra left the air. Al Franken announced he was leaving, surrounded by a swarm of "will he run?" puff pieces in the MSM.

February
They went off in Duluth. Al Franken announced he was running for Senate and finally left the air. Thom Hartmann replaced him. AAR was sold to Mark Green and his brother.

March
Their Los Angeles affiliate did a purge. I and thousands of others across the U.S. celebrated AAR's third anniversary (recommended).

April
Lionel replaced Sam Seder (no one knows who either of those are). Al Franken at Kandiyohi County DFL's "best bean feed fundraiser ever".

May
Desperate for anything to put here, I started making things up. Air America 2.0 relaunched. Al Franken's net worth was revealed.

June
Janeane Garofalo used to torture Iraqis. Bree Walker bought Cindy Sheehan's ranch. I first started to realize how far out there Janeane Garofalo is so, ever-helpful, I suggested "Catholic School" therapy. Then, after answering a perfectly reasonable question about her, I continued to help with some daily affirmations. Plus, Center for American Progress conservative talk co-author linked to Bill Press, Ed Schultz, Jones Radio

July
Al Franken: daily affirmations. Pure class: Jeanine Garofalo treats rash during interview. Pleather! Janeane Garofalo: 9/11 was an inside job! Janeane Garofalo nude (back)! I pleaded with AAR to do something, anything.

August
Mark Riley leaves. Ed Schultz: Minnesota bridge fell because of Bush. Janine Garrofalo joined the cast of TV's 24. I issued a personal plea. Issues at KLSD San Diego. Al Franken, Truther?

September
AAR has left the air in Memphis. Al Franken linked to Norman Hsu. Ed Schultz' bar fight for peace. Air America "Clout" features Truthers. I issued yet another plea (recommended).

October
Free Thought Radio: Godless liberals' home at Air America. Randi Rhodes was "mugged" after having left an Irish pub without having eaten all day. No one knows what happened. As far as we know, Blackwater thugs did indeed push her. Or, it could have been something else. I uploaded audio of her explanation. AAR exits Austin. AAR's VP of programming said they were going to move away from "extremist" programming. He was fired shortly after that.

November
I suggested a possible way for Janeane Garofalo to become slightly normal. AAR off in San Diego. This was just a joke and not a secret message, despite what you might have heard. The Air America Radio Cruise was announced, and no, that wasn't a joke.

December
Flashback: when Janeane Garofalo was cute (last century). Attack ad against Al Franken on Iraq. Libtalk returns to Columbus but off in Eugene, Oregon. Finally, Ed Schultz needs you to start his car for him.

Ed Schultz: "I am done with the Clintons"

While scanning the Fargo Craigslist ads I noticed that someone calling themselves a "famous local progressive radio host" was looking for someone to start their car for them, and I was reminded of last Tuesday's rant on his show where Ed Schultz said he was "done with the Clintons" due to, among other things, the fact that Hillary won't come on his show. He admitted that his complaints were "self-serving".

Reading the entire transcript is left as an exercise (link), but here's a taste:

Does Hillary Clinton think that I am going to nail her. Does she think that this is some kind of torpedo thing or something. Every time the Bush white house gets in trouble they don’t run, they sprint with a stopwatch to fox news. They can’t get there fast enough. They call their conservative talk show hosts on the air from the white house demanding access. That my friend is infrastructure. If we are going to build the confidence of progressive listeners, independently minded thinking people in this country, who like the fact that there are people out there making decisions on destroying CIA tapes and the protect America act, just to name a few current things that are out there. That maybe it would be good to talk to the folks unedited. This is part of the fight of the culture of media access. And I am down on Biden and I am down on Hillary Clinton and I am not going to hide it. They are not helping Hartman out, they are not helping Rhodes out, they are not helping Stephanie Miller. I called Woody the other day and I asked 'woody when was the last time that Hillary Clinton was on Bill Press show' 'oh about 2 years ago.' Don't tell me behind closed doors that you are really concerned about the sound chamber of America and we are out here battling and battling and battling and we don’t have any access.

Paul Farhi / WaPo: Al Franken not a running joke

Paul Farhi of the Washington Post offers "No Running Jokes Here/With His Eye on a Senate Seat, Comedian Al Franken Says It's Time to Get Serious". Despite having four screens to work with, it is completely devoid of any content. It simply points out that he's toned down his "jokes" in order to appear normal. It briefly mentions Franken's contradictory positions on Iraq, but other than that doesn't question him on his policies.

Air America Radio can't even make it in Eugene Oregon

This is just sad:
Oregon Public Broadcasting announced on Tuesday that it will buy KOPT from Churchill Media. The AM station offers Air America’s lineup of liberal talk shows...

...Talk radio host Ed Schultz, whose nationally syndicated show airs on many stations that also carry Air America, had been trying to put together a group of Oregon investors to buy the station, but that deal fell through, said James Holm, Schultz's producer...

...Churchill Media believed it had a winner with the progressive radio format in liberal Eugene, broadcasting Air America’s slate of talk shows that included comedian Al Franken, Stephanie Miller and Randi Rhodes, beginning in 2004...

While it did lure a devoted audience, said Churchill General Manager Paul Danitz, the advertising required to support the expenses never quite materialized...

WVKO 1580 AM Columbus: latest progressive talk lemming

WVKO 1580 AM in Columbus, Ohio (wvko1580.com) will on Monday become the latest station to try to find an audience for "progressive" talk. It's run as a one-man operation by one Gary Richards, who's only leasing the station after it fell into bankruptcy. Their schedule includes Air America Radio shows like Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartmann, and This is America with Jon Elliot, as well as non-AAR programming from Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, and Ed Schultz. He's seeking donations to keep the operation afloat until they start bringing in the long green.

Let the countdown begin...

Al Franken: double-talk on Iraq

The following campaign ad from Senator Norm Coleman takes Al Franken to task for his various conflicting comments regarding Iraq. He says he never supported or opposed Iraq, but he did. In 2006, he said he didn't support a "timetable" for withdrawal; this year he supported a "timeline". In 2006 he was against cutting off funding, in 2007 he was for it.

Flashback: when Janeane Garofalo was cute (last century)

There haven't been too many posts here about the lady at the grocery store, because she hasn't really been doing anything. And, likewise with Janeane Garofalo.

With all the free time on her (JFo's) hands because the 24 TV show is presumably not in production due to the writer's strike, one would think she'd at least try some way to get some sort of attention, perhaps by joining with Code Pink, Rosie O'Donnell, and Dennis Kucinich to push for impeachment, but even they probably realize appearing with her would be bad for their careers.

Anyway, so it's time for a flashback. Younger folks - those under 30 or so - may not realize this, but at one time during the last century Janine was really, really cute. And, I mean that in the "if I had poured honey all over her she wouldn't have been much sweeter but just as long as I could get her not to say anything" sense.

Nowadays, of course, she looks like she just got out from doing a month in Sybil Brand. So, most won't recognize that the person on the following video is indeed her, but I can verify that that is indeed her.

Of course, her personality was somewhat similar then as now, so it helps to mute the sound. And, try to ignore the smoking. But, other than that, she was really, really cute:
