First: if you're Sheldon Drobny, please don't do it. While this site has made fun of you and your network and hosts occasionally, we do want to keep you around.
Now, on to the big news: Drobny's NovaM Radio is apparently going to shut down, according to the Radio Equalizer (link). He's received a letter from Randi Rhodes' lawyer, which also explains her recent absence:
On Sunday, Nova received a letter from Mr. Gaulin [her lawyer] asserting that the contract with Ms. Rhodes was terminated due to material breaches and other reasons. Ms. Rhodes had not broadcast for over a week prior to this time, a situation which was diplomatically referred to as a "problem" that was solely within Nova’s control to solve. A few days earlier, Sheldon Drobny, founder of Nova M, and a co-founder of Air America Radio, attempted suicide and is hospitalized in Chicago.
Meanwhile, Nova M's only other "star", Mike Malloy, had his wife contact the RE with the news that he'll still be doing his show and has other affiliate deals.
And, in fact, one of those deals is with "On Second Thought", the successor company to NovaM, which might file for bankruptcy. That was quick, but I'm sure it's all compliant with accountancy rules! (link)
Network general manager Eric Reinert tells R&R that Nova M is no longer an entity and that a new company called On Second Thought LLC has been formed and is moving forward. Reinart also confirms that Rhodes is no longer associated with the group... The new network will continue to offer host Mike Malloy along with new shows from hosts Nancy Skinner, who has been filling in for Randi Rhodes during the recent contract dispute, and Mike Newcomb, a popular local host in the Phoenix area.
UPDATE: "On Second Thought" appears to be a "separate" company, and - of course - I mean the scare quotes in the sense of extra emphasis rather than implying that there's any accountancy shenanigans involved. However, I do note that their website (onsecondthought.net) redirects to novamradio.com. However, it is a treasure trove of information. For instance, we learn that they're "Talk Radio for Independent Minds", all of whom just happen to think alike and if they don't... We also learn that Nancy Skinner is "Fun, Feisty and FRESH!", which sounds like something a Craigslist BBW might say about herself in one of those ads.
