Who knew that Randi Rhodes has her own Rapid Response Team designed to immediately smack down rumors and false statements about her? And, who knew that Rhoads herself was apparently the sole member of the RRT?
No sooner had Dave Kopel, columnist for the Rocky Mountain News, offered "Regrettably, Rhodes returns to radio" (link), then RR's RRT swung into action, offering a vigorous take-down of the apparently factually-challenged article. Unfortunately, she posted it as a comment at Jane Galt's site (link), meaning that even fewer people will see it than will hear her show.
Here's a video of Randi Rhodes explaining why she quit Air America Radio on the Larry King Live. She claims that the real reason she was suspended was because they wanted to re-negotiate her contract to add in the right to fire her at will. She claims they wouldn't allow her to come back on the air unless she agreed to amend her contract. And, she says that AAR releasing the clip was "market research" but, needless to say, Larry King doesn't ask her to explain what she meant.
She might have said something "interesting" after that, but the surreality of watching the clip was getting to me so I'll leave that to you.
Randi Rhodes has either quit, walked away, or been fired from Air America Radio! (AAR is a "liberal" radio network, and Rhoads has been one of their key hosts throughout their turbulent four year history. The network continues broadcasting on some radio stations throughout the U.S.)
She will supposedly be joining San Francisco's Green 960, formerly known as The Quake (KKGN), on Monday.
Mark Green, president, and Charlie Kireker, Chair, have released the following statement:
Last week Air America suspended Randi Rhodes for abusive, obscene language at a recent public appearance in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station... Air America Media was informed last night by Ms. Rhodes that she has chosen to terminate her employment with the company... We wish her well and thank her for past services to Air America. We will soon announce exciting new talent and programming that will accelerate Air America's growth in the future.
Their "liberal" listeners are restless on the announcement thread (link) and Rhoades' old site (therandirhodesshow.com) has been redirected to Air America's site. Her site contained forums in addition to archives, and it's a bit surprising that she didn't maintain control over it. The DUmmies are also angered (link), as are the other dummies over at HuffPost (link).
UPDATE: An unnamed source says Rhodes will be moving to NovaM, the Sheldon Drobny network. Not only that, but she'll be broadcast over "all" (probably just some) Clear Channel stations.
AAR is supposedly glad to see their star go (per the HuffPost thread), and I'm sure they're right. After all, they've still got Lionel, and Thom Hartmann, and some other people, and I'm sure they'll make out OK! Meanwhile, it's not like being broadcast nationwide over an actual network like Clear Channel means anything.
TWO GREAT TASTES UPDATE: It's officious! Randi has joined the Nova M gang, with CEO John Manzo saying:
"I just can't stop smiling - Randi is simply the biggest and the best. Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy under one roof – talk about TALENT!"
NB: In Arizona, tents are called roofs. And, Randi herself says:
With Manzo at helm of Nova M, I am truly going to work for the best of the best. He is radio elite…and I am too. I'm home, I'm home, I'm home!
Her new show will air 3-6pm weekdays. Tonight, April 10 2008, she will also be appearing on Larry King Live. Man the tape delay!
[UPDATES BELOW]
Air America Radio host Randi Rhodes is under attack by pro-Clintonian forces after calling Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro "whores". She even called Hillary a "big f*cking whore" and said that Ferraro turned out to be a "David Duke in drag". This was during some sort of "comedy" stand-up performace somewhere and not on her radio show. "Liberals" (reportedly under the command of Gen. Lanny Davis) weigh in here.
Whether Rhodes will face any repurcussions from her performance is not yet known. However, let me suggest taking a buddy along the next time she goes to an Irish bar. The Clintons have a history.
UPDATE: Rhodes has been suspended, per AAR chair Charlie Kireker (link):
"Air America encourages strong opinions about public affairs but does not condone such abusive, ad hominem language by our Hosts."
The natives are restless on the thread announcing that perennial also ran Sam Seder will be filling in for her, claiming that she did nothing wrong and that the Clintons strongarmed AAR into aquiescence.
Meanwhile, graphic artists have been brought in to temporarily remove her from the site's graphics. She is reportedly jetting to AAR's Morozniy Zhop, Siberia, outlet to fulfill the terms of her rehabilitation agreement.
UPDATE 2: The suspension is indefinite, per this. That will also give them time to "to gauge public reaction". Here's a hint: if they hadn't suspended her, no one would have ever heard of her.
And, per this:
Understandably, Rhodes is stunned and angry. About her employers she told me: "They are in breach of my contract and have damaged my hard won excellent reputation in the broadcast industry..." Rhodes added she received thank you letters from representatives of Air America, the San Francisco affiliate and sponsors praising her for the performance that now has her in hot water.
Randi Rhodes sure isn't falling down on the job. On Super Tuesday, she aired yet another "parody", this time an ad from the group "Republicans for Mitt Romney or Mass Suicide":
...[Announcer] If John McCain is the nominee, well, we are going to kill everybody, then turn the guns on ourselves. So choose wisely this election day. This has been a paid ad for Republicans for Mitt Romney, or (gun cocking sound effect) mass suicide.
Randi Rhodes says that "Blackwater thugs" weren't responsible for her being "mugged" after leaving an Irish pub in NYC. The California wild fires are another story:
And you know, every time I look for it what comes up, believe it or not, is that Blackwater wants to move to San Diego and build this giant complex in San Diego right where most of the evacuations are taking place and you know. ...Some of them are thought to be the work of arsonists and in the same breath you've got a community that's on fire that just recently protested Blackwater West. Just recently said no to Blackwater and apparently you don't do that. ...You know, nobody is saying Blackwater set the fires, that is nobody that doesn't want their house burned down. Nobody is saying that, but it is all so bizarre that this is America and you have to sort of sit there and wonder... arson, same place Blackwater West wants to be, people protesting. And then you find out that some of the guys that used to work for Blackwater are now in Schwarzenegger's administration. It's all so creepy.

Speaking on her radio show today, Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes spoke about her supposed mugging. She said she was watching football in an Irish pub and went outside for a smoke. The next thing she knew she was on the ground, having fallen or been pushed into a metal grate. She also said she hadn't eaten all day, and she's been to a series of doctors and dentists to fix her injuries and they've also been unable to determine a medical reason for the incident. She also says she sent a two sentence email to AAR's management telling them that she had been mugged; when right-wingers were blamed for the incident she decided not to speak out because she had doctor's appointments.
Here's an edited recording of the start of her show. Bear in mind that about five minutes of the beginning was edited out for brevity. In the raw version she complains about the "paparazzi" staking out her building, including one who asked if there was a "secret lift" to Rhode's apartment.
10/20/07 UPDATE: Air America's channel has released their own video (link), lamely called "Randi Rhodes is back, talks about what happened to her". It features the full, near 8-minute introduction to her show, accompanied by only one graphic instead of my shorter, more multimedia production which featured four graphics and titles. And, it includes this hilariously defensive video description:
Liberal bloggers are taking a beating for speculating that Randi's injuries were the result of a right-wing attack. And it is wrong to jump to conclusions and point the finger when you don't have all the facts. But isn't it also wrong that right-wing blogs are now speculating that Randi's injuries are the result of too much alcohol? There are any number of scenarios that would explain Randi's fall. So it's odd that the right is attacking the left for jumping to conclusions and then turning around and doing the exact same thing.
Air America Radio host Randi Rhodes was supposedly mugged on Sunday night in New York City while walking her dog and supposedly lost a few teeth. Already, her fans are saying "This was a political attack" and others are playing a similar game. However, at this point in time all that's known is that she's not on the air; AAR themselves says "reports of a presumed hate crime are unfounded." And, the police said no report had been filed. Note that Rhodes was sued for slander a couple years ago; the last that was heard on that case was in January, with the plaintiff cleared to go ahead despite Air America filing for bankruptcy. Other actions may have taken place since then.
While I wish her the best, I also wonder how much this story will change as the details come out. There's even the possibility that there was no attack at all.
UPDATE: From this:
Rhodes' lawyer told the Daily News she was injured in a fall while walking her dog. He said she's not sure what happened, and only knows that she fell down and is in a lot of pain. The lawyer said Rhodes expects to be back on the air Thursday. He stressed there is no indication she was targeted or that she was the victim of a "hate crime."
So much for the greatest minds of the blogosphere!
UPDATE 2: AAR host Jon Elliott - the brain surgeon who started the ball rolling - said this in a completely voluntary written confession:
"I shouldn't have speculated based on hearsay that Randi Rhodes had been mugged and that it may have been an attack from a right wing hate machine. I apologize for jumping to conclusions based on an emotional reaction."
Police have also contacted Rhodes, and she says she's not going to file a police report. I don't suggest making the "glugg, glugg" gesture myself, but I'm sure many are doing that.
UPDATE 3: Here's Randi Rhodes' statement on her "mugging".

One of the core tenets of "liberalism", aka Gramscism, is that "liberals" can't be racist, homophobic, or all the other names "liberals" accuse non-"liberals" of being, no matter how racist, homophobic, etc. those "liberals" in fact are.
For instance, on this excerpt Randi Rhodes says she wants to "kick Ann Coulter in the nuts", and there or elsewhere she's engaged in the now-standard "liberal" "joke" of pretending she's not really a woman.
Now, surprisingly, one site is leading the clarion call to reveal Randi Rhodes for what she is:
Listening to Randi Rhodes on Air America Radio I heard her mock Ann Coulter, insinuating she was a transsexual. This is insulting to Ann Coulter on a purely personal level, and it's demeaning of anyone trans because of the stereotypes. Just goes to show you that ignorance, bigotry, and transphobia isn't exclusive to right wing Republicans.
For shame Randi, for shame.
Randi Rhodes, discussing her "style", says:
It's fact-based scatological rants. The stuff is in my head because I read everything in the morning. And of course, all weekend long I'm watching C-span. So I have the facts. But it's scatological. It just comes out...
Then, in response to the question, "If we were at a bar, would it be the same Randi Rhodes that I hear on the air?", we're treated with this:
Yeah, except drunk. Except drunk and really horny.
It's at times like this that I think back to the glory days, when Janeane Garofalo was cute. Sure, she tried to be trendy, rather than (just as an example) dressing in a more classic/traditional/preppy/Catholic schoolgirl way. But, at least she had a cute face. Then, she got dumpy - and not in the natural way but more in the Fran Liebowitz way - and when she went to a blonde wig I couldn't quite figure out exactly what sort of message she was sending. But, she still had somewhat of a cute face.
Hey... what happened to Randi? And, hey, wasn't Brian Maloney here too? Did they leave or something?
UPDATE: Janine truly is a woman of a thousand faces, many of them cute, some, well, not so cute.

The "government contractor" CACI - which is involved in some way in U.S. prisons in Iraq - has been cleared to proceed with their defamation suit against Air America and Randi Rhodes over statements she made on her show:
The suit stemmed from comments Rhodes made Aug. 25-26, 2005 on her radio show. According to CACI's complaint, she accused CACI employees of raping and murdering Iraqi civilians at Abu Ghraib prison, claims that CACI said were "false and defamatory."
They claim that the fact that Air America is bankrupt doesn't matter because any judgment would be paid by insurance. As everyone knows, it would never be paid out of profits.

Discussing the recent "Torture Bill/"Detainee Trial Bill"/"Military Commissions Act of 2006" and keying off the article "In Case I Disappear" by "scholar" (her characterization) William Rivers Pitt, Randi Rhodes suggests that everyone creates a "disappearance plan" in case they're sent to Gitmo or even worse places. From the audio here:
Make known what you would like to be done on your behalf if you should disappear. I'm serious. I hate to say this... We don't have to worry about future attacks on America, because George Bush has destroyed pretty much everything we always thought of as America.
In addition to that plan, make sure you've got a and directions to Canada.

Jeff Gannon, aka James Guckert, was scheduled to appear on Randi Rhodes' show yesterday. However, in his quest to only leave an impression and not marks, he pulled out of the appearance at the last second because of the way that she was promoting it.
From an email message personally sent to me by Randi:
...Hear the interview plus the backstory on how it came about through Randi's outrage over gay Republicans rolling over while other conservatives equate homosexuals with sexual predators...
Because of this or something else the ever-wacky Randi said, Gannon now says:
I cancelled my appearance on the Randi Rhodes Show today on Air America Radio because I wanted to be treated as a guest. I objected to the insulting way in which they were promoting my appearance. I really enjoy to debate, but I'm not going to participate in a conversation where I am not going to be accorded basic courtesy even before the show begins...
An example of what he means is not provided; if it's not one of the pictures at the first link it must be something she said on the air. He's probably not refering to the riff-raff in her fora.
UPDATE: This audio clip, titled "Randi Rhodes: Bush's Hooker Chickens Out" and featuring outtakes from her show, may perhaps give us a clue to why he would cancel his appearance.

The sweet smell of Washington's state flower the magnolia was in the air as Air America host Randi Rhodes visited Seattle on or about 4:20PM on August 19 or 20 or so for this year's Hempfest. The "Fest" - as it's known to regulars - celebrates one of America's original crops, a versatile plant that can be used as both a food source and for industrial uses as well. Whether used to make animal feed, oil, moisturizer, clothing, twine, ropes, or even a storage pot, it truly is a plant of a thousand uses. And, it was even used to make the barrette that the gentleman in the video uses to tie up his hair! It truly is a superplant, and like the good environmentalist that she is, Randi Rhodes was there to celebrate its 1001 uses.
Seattle, of course, is also home to AAR's own KPTK 1090 AM, which has higher ratings than all other Washington state radio stations combined.
A note from the editor: "hemp" is not marijuana and just because Randi supports the cultivation of this wonderplant doesn't mean that she advocates the use of or even uses on air such mind-altering chemicals. No, there are other explanations.
Also, be sure and look out for the purple acid.

Via this we learn that mysterious forces known only as "they" apparently put Randi Rhodes on a no-fly list, causing her inconvenience on fun a weekend getaway to Seattle which turned into tragedy.
While there's some possibility this was a mistake, or it was political payback, or it was due to various questionable things featured on her program, I know one thing: they don't need to worry about Randi launching a liquid bomb.
Unless, of course, there's a Christmas Tree on the plane.

...I first heard [about Ken Lay's death] via a "comic" bit that was over-the-top, and pretty tasteless, even by my admittedly loose political correctness standards. What followed was even dumber though. Perhaps the dumbest thing I've heard on TV or radio in the past month - and that's saying something.UPDATE: In an instance of great minds thinking alike, one of the HuffPost's nobodies (David Goldstein) is getting into the act:
Randi implied the Bush administration had Kenny Boy killed to cover up their collusion with him in the Enron scandal...
...Sure, we've already seen suspicions raised in the comment threads of liberal blogs, but no real effort will be made to push this theory and no "serious" journalist would ever take it seriously, except as an opportunity to ridicule the generic "left." [I've done my part! -- BA]
...As a Democrat I suppose I should be proud that my party tends to shy away from such wacky, over-the-top character assassination -- you know, like characterizing a war hero who left three limbs on the battlefield as a coward and a traitor. But I'm not so sure it's good strategy. If we hope to compete, I'm not so sure we can afford to reject even the vilest of Karl Rove's tactics...

Who and what is a progressive?UPDATE: It has come to this site's attention that the guest is Dan Savage, not Michael Savage.
Is there a coherent and compelling message capable of leading America toward a more just and humane society?
Who on the left is capable of articulating that message?
Posted at 10:34 PM | Comments (6)
Back in 1999, Randi Rhodes allegedly urinated on a Christmas tree at a party thrown by co-horts from WJNO, her station at the time.
Randi admits that she'd had a few martinis, but she maintains that she was just play-acting.
However, the party's hostess claims otherwise:
"I'm just happy the tree was on tile and not carpet"
On presumptive behalf of Randi and all her friends at Air America Radio, Happy Holiday Season.

According to this, Air America's screechiest host said the following:
"If little girls in America in 1851 got together and danced around a fir tree they would have been burned as withches! ...witches were burned in this country until the 1850s."
We're also informed that the last witch we evil Amurrikkkans killed was in 1713, and that was by hanging.

She just said this on her show. They are dragging her into Federal Court for material she used in late August. She seems confident she can get around this and read a legalistic satement on her show - indicating that she uses extensive sources.More on this here. A little later in the DK thread comes this alleged transcript:
She can use the discovery phase to expose all sorts of embarassing into on CACI but this can be disasterous very both her and Air America. Stay tuned! [Update] A bit more info: CACI was closely associated with the ABU Ghraib scandal and it has been suggested by many that their employees were involved in torture They are asking 10 million in punitive damages for defamation...
"On this show, on August 25th and 26th, I discussed with you (our listeners) many issues relating to operations in the ongoing war in Iraq. And on the 25th of August, I read you materials about the treatment of prisoners in Iraq, including excerpts from Marjorie Cohn's interview with Army Reserve Brigadeer General Janis Karpinski, who is now retired as a Colonel, and you might remember that Janis Karpinski was in charge of the Abu Ghraib prison, where prisoners were tortured and mistreated by American soldiers. And in the course of my show, I may have mentioned CACI, a corporation, and on the 26th I talked about the war, and I had an interview with Cindy Sheehan. Remember that? Well, about a month after those broadcasts, CACI PT and CACI International, two multimillion-dollar companies started a lawsuit against me and Piquant, which is the company that owns Air America. In the lawsuit, which they started in federal court in Virginia, CACI PT and CACI International claim we committed defamation per se because I allegedly made 'a number of false and defamatory statements about CACI' on my show, on August 25th and 26th.Note that CACI sent a threatening letter to an antiwar.com partner.
"CACI PT claims to be a corporation that 'specializes in intelligence solutions and has provided intelligence services, including interrogators, to the United States military in Iraq, pursuant to contracts with the United States.' CACI International, Inc. claims to be 'an international corporation providing high technology and professional services, specializing in systems integration, managed network solutions, and information assurance.' According to CACI International's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission that are posted on CACI's website, the company has about 1.6 billion dollars in revenues in fiscal year 2005. Now you can read more about these companies on their website, caci.com, if you like. These two CACI companies allege that Piquant and I defamed them when I made alleged statements about their work for the US government. They claim that I should pay no less than one million dollars in compensatory damages and no less than ten million dollars in punitive damages. Their lawyers in the suit are Steptoe & Johnson, a major Washington, DC law firm.
"As with all of the shows that I do for you, I prepare thoroughly before I get on the air, and for those shows in August, when I spoke about the events in Iraq, I relied on several sources, including reliable published materials, and I made many of these sources available to you on the website for my show, therandirhodesshow.com, and they are still available at that address. [I believe she's referring to this page, that links to a Guardian, CorpWatch, Truthout article mentioning CACI] I spoke about these things and these events because they're important in the political life of this country. I believe they were newsworthy because of their importance to the war and the future of Iraq and because they involve disgraceful abuses of power. Nonetheless, in their lawsuit, CACI challenges my right to speak out on matters of public interest.
"So I'm fighting back. I'm going to dispute their allegations. I have an unfettered right to free speech protected by the First Amendment. This right includes my right to speak as I did on my show in August, and I believe there is no merit to CACI's allegations against me and Piquant. Moreover, among the many defenses to a defamation claim is the defense that truth is a complete defense. So I look forward to the progress of this lawsuit in which, during the discovery process, I anticipate that CACI will have to provide me with all information they have that disputes anything I said about CACI during my August 25th and 26th shows. And when that information is released, I believe that I, this company Piquant, and the truth will prevail. So now you know."

Have you ever wanted to crank Randi Rhodes up to 11? Now, you can do it. Download this 10 Meg or so video of her appearance on CSPAN (located on this page).
Then, turn the volume way, way up. It's like the radio Randi, but illustrated with hand gestures.
What they discussed wasn't all that interesting because it was basically a shouting match between the Air America hostess and fellow radio personality Janet Parshall. Surprisingly enough, the last didn't know that our own "American" president had lifted the Davis-Bacon Act for the Gulf Coast as well as three south Florida counties. That means that instead of being paid as little as $9 an hour, those doing construction work there can be paid as little as the minimum wage.
Those companies with fixed-price contracts are going to make a killing on this, but they all plan on returning all the money they save on salaries to the federal government. (Just kidding!)
In the foodfight, Randi kept trying to get Parshall to discuss this matter, but, since the latter didn't know about it it was a bit pointless.
Parshall tried to discuss the Louis Farrakhan conspiracy theory that was discussed by two minor AAR hosts. Rhodes pointed out that it wasn't her that discussed that idea. We know that Rachel Maddow and Chuck D didn't dismiss this when it was brought up on Tucker Carlson's show; whether Randi has never discussed it is not known.
In any case, if you're able to, for instance, pipe the video into a big screen TV with mega-speakers or something you can enjoy a Clockwork Orange-style experience as you watch the TV version of Air America's screechiest host.
There's a screenshot here, and the DUmmies discuss it here.
UPDATE: Originally, this post had a rare internal inconsistency: I said the Farrakhan theory was discussed on AAR, then I said it was discussed on Carlson's show. In fact, AFAIK, it was only discussed on that TV show. If anyone heard it being discussed on AAR itself, please leave a comment with the date and time. I deeply regret any misunderstandings my mistake has caused, and this update was made voluntarily and not under duress of any kind. I will shortly reveal the names of my conspirators in this criminal act against The People. Do cvidanya!

She will emcee and do some stand-up comedy. The latter is something she says she's "scared to death" about, but Rhodes said she is being coached and "getting [her] stage legs together."At this point I have to ask: is this a joke or what?
...The middle segment of the show will feature music. While no acts have been confirmed, Rhodes said they will likely book artists with "a political conscience."
After a set change, the final part of the show will be modeled after Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect."
Rhodes, a liberal talk show host, said they may even "bring in some Republican pundits and put them in front of my audience and see how they do."I understand the urge to find something to do after Air America crashes and burns, but a traveling political variety show?
Rhodes hopes to take the show to some of the 70 markets where Air America has affiliates. "I don't want people to come watch me do radio because I really can't imagine what's more boring than that," Rhodes said. Instead, she hopes the stage show will "really entertain them in a big way and a different way than they get from me on the radio. I'm so excited to do it."

CALLER (continuing): The thing that really killed me was the fact that when they bussed some of [the Katrina evacuees] out of the [Superdome]. They loaded them on the bus, and they wouldn't tell them where they were going.
...RANDI (interrupting): Actually, you know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of a little visit I made to the Holocaust Museum, and I saw these cattle cars.
...RANDI: So, what are you supposed to do? Just do a "faith-based evacuation"? (Changing voice, as if an evacuee) "I'm sure he wouldn't send me to Auschwitz."
...RANDI: Check this out. Let's just -- Think about it this way. People were taken one place. Their children were taken another place. THIS IS SO MUCH LIKE THE HOLOCAUST. I can't even -- You know, it's like, you're not supposed to forget the Holocaust so that it can't happen again. And here you have people being loaded onto transportation vehicles, not being told where they're going, and their children are being taken someplace else ...

I haven't been able to confirm this, but it sounds like something Randi Rhodes would say so I'm going to assume it's more or less correct:
Self described gang-banger turned liberal talk show host Randi Rhodes showed the depths of perverse liberal thinking today on her show by declaring, "They were not shooting at rescue helicopters in New Orleans. The media was trying to portray them that way. What if they were just trying to get attention, saying to the rescuers - look, I am here. Come and rescue me."

On Friday, Sep. 2, on or about 3:46PM Pacific:
Randi Rhodes repeatedly urged listeners in hurricane ravaged areas to go right out and loot, arguing that poor people should be allowed to do so at will. She even advised her listeners to avoid discount centers like Wal-Mart and concentrate their looting on some of the higher-end stores so as to have access to higher quality stuff.
From here. Note that the person who heard this, Ned Rice, also says:
I'm not sure if Randi was joking or serious (although with her it's always hard to be sure), but even in jest should she be allowed to do this on the air?

Is this quote from yesterday's show a new low, or just one of a long series of lows?
"This President is never gonna do the right thing. I think somewhere deep down inside him he takes a lot of joy about losing people, if he thinks they vote Democrat or if he thinks they're poor, or if he thinks they're in a blue state, whatever his reasons are not to rescue those people who are (planning?) for their safety."
UPDATE: There's a little more on Randi here, including an attempt to confirm her Bush was golfing during Katrina bit. That links to audio (warning: starts audio player) of her statement above.

From 8/30 comes this Randi quote:
"The president went golfing at the El Mirage Golf Course yesterday while the people were literally suffering... The president decided that the best use of his time would be to go golfing."
Do I need to tell you that that was apparently false?

In marked contrast to her testy interview yesterday with NPR's Neal Conan, Cindy Sheehan was warm and friendly during an appearance this afternoon on Randi Rhodes' program on Air America Radio. The two reminisced about Rhodes' visit to Camp Casey and their budding friendship. "Did you tell your listeners we're best friends now and we're going to terrorize New York City?" Sheehan said to Rhodes.Thankfully, there are no Christmas trees in that part of Texas.
Rhodes responded by telling a story from her visit to Camp Casey. "I will never forget that night sitting outside under the stars with you," Rhodes told Sheehan. "It was at one of those wrought-iron tables you see out in lawn-furniture land...Cindy Sheehan drinks Heineken...I was drinking Corona...It was just like five girls, and we were sitting around...All of a sudden, I got a beer, and I put it down, and it went right through the table..."

As previously discussed, Randi Rhodes made a very special surprise guest appearance on the Brad Show/Laura Flanders Show simulcast live from Camp Casey in Crawford TX.
There's a picture of Randi and a couple of Laura here, which includes this heartwarming news:
Rumor has it we'll hear from Rev. Al Sharpton, Randi Rhodes and perhaps Martin Sheen (the real President of the United States [today]...Perhaps he'll be able to tell us what the "noble cause" is.)
Meanwhile, the Houston Democrats missed Randi's appareance, but they do have a picture of Joan Baez (hey, some people are into that, and this is a non-judgemental site).
Last week, Air America's San Diego outlet AM 1360 KLSD, sent their Stacy Taylor to the festivities. A video clip is here, uninteresting pictures are here.

This site has another picture of Joan Baez (look, it's not my place to ask questions about personal preferences). They also have a sign suggesting that Bush send the twins. Indeed.
Meanwhile, AAR's Phoenix outlet KXXT Talk 1010 AM, has converted their site into pimping Cindy's cause. They've even created a whole new site dedicated to that effort: CrawfordOrBust.com.
The attractive Kim Macias, who appears to be in their advertising department, swooned but has recovered. Check out those prices! Just $15 for 15 minutes of air time on a barely-listened-to "liberal" station? (There's also another picture of Joan Baez further down the page. Hey, who am I to judge?)
UPDATE: Pictured right is the Rev. Al Sharpton's appearance. However, that picture doesn't show you everything that was going on. Click here for the wider shot showing what else was happening. You probably won't be surprised. CNN informs us that the Right Rev. felt "compelled" to meet Cindy.

Who, you might ask, listens to Air America's Boulder CO outlet KKZN? Why, none other than "Nina Storey", pictured right. Nina is apparently a "Lilith"-style singer-songwriter and a typical resident of that fine, albeit "liberal" city.
Randi Rhodes had gone outside to meet with those who couldn't make it inside. Apparently, the line was still wrapping around the building after the cutoff! Randi was signing autographcs outside while we partied.I know one thing: that radio station never would have forgotten about Al Franken. Al, Al, Al!
Inside, Nina Storey was performing in a very intimate venue. She was right there. :-) Nina Storey is a Lillith-type singer, kind of a mix of soul and folk, and she's extremely good! She's also a Boulder local, and man does she look the part...
[His friend] managed to catch an "I Did Not Vote 4 Bush" band bracelet they were throwing into the crowd!
...[Another friend] won a Janeane Garofalo-autographed Air America T-shirt! SO COOL! Later on, she got it signed by Randi Rhodes as well...awesome!!
...They even raffled off the Bush Dart Board, signed by Randi Rhodes and Jay Marvin...
...Once the raffle was over, we realized that Randi Rhodes was still outside. AM 760 kinda goofed here, she'd pretty much been outside the entire time, so it was time to go find her...

Surely it shouldn't be difficult to say something nice about Ms. Randi, right? One or more commentators have said some non-nice things about her, now it's time for the other side.

Air America's Randi Rhodes received the biggest cheers and a number of "We love you, Randis" from the mixed age, multicultural audience...Did they conduct an ethnographic study, or was it just a quick melanin check?
In between jokes that cracked up the crowd, Randi Rhodes spoke at length about a timeline created by Congressman John Conyers...The link he provides has a misspelling, which leads to a scraper site featuring paternity testing ads. It's definitely more entertaining than the correct address. As for the joke, well, I guess it's all a matter of the timing. If a master comic said it it might be OK. But, anyone else saying it would sound like someone you see in the downtown L.A. library scribbling notes on index cards while researching their lawsuit against the Pope.
Rather than transcribe parts of Randi's speech on the timeline (which you should all read and study for yourself), I've decided to post my two favorite jokes. After reciting the criminal past of Bush Administration officials such as John Poindexter and Elliot Abrams, Randi joked: "I think they put their criminal activity at the top of their resumes now."
The second joke was off-color so I can't tell you here, but you can read it at my blog, Why Are We Back In Iraq? at this link (I know...shameless plug...heh).

On July 23rd, in over 150 towns and cities, prominent speakers and ordinary citizens will hold public forums, perform dramatic recreations of the Downing Street meeting, and host house parties and study circles...Sure, the last bit is a bit worrisome and I hope they'll keep the partiers under supervision and won't be just releasing them into the community.
The agenda at various of these events will include speeches, panel discussions, viewing of DVDs, dramatic recreations of the Downing Street Minutes, debates, writing postcards and letters to congress members and senators not present, writing letters to the editor, training participants in effective lobbying, honoring local fallen soldiers, and planning local marches and flyering campaigns – with such actions in some cases immediately following the event...

Randi Rhodes recently visited the Air America Radio outlet in Phoenix, 1010 AM KXXT. Oddly enough, I have not yet been able to find pictures, reports, gossip, or scandalous assertations concerning her visit. An email she sent to her fans describes her arrival in America's Kiln.
We do, however, have a report from the Arizona Republic entitled "Liberal radio voices being heard". If you find anything in that report that offers anything you didn't already know, please alert the citizen media. Of course, it's the Arizona Republic, so you wouldn't expect them to ask Randi any tough questions concerning, for just two examples, the Christmas tree incident or whether she's heard from the Secret Service lately.
In non-Randi, Phoenix news, we're alerted that local host Mike Newcomb enjoys playing a fun game entitled, "Name That Holy Book". Oh boy, that must be funny, right up there with "Republicans: Evil or really Evil?"
Previously: "Al Franken meets Bryan Buchan in Phoenix" and "KXXT's recipe for Air America success". Newcomb is part of their plan for "success."
UPDATE: The Radio Equalizer takes apart the claims made in the AZ Republic article. He takes AAR much too seriously. Plus, Mike Malloy is endlessly entertaining, Randi is entertaining, and Janeane used to be cute. They're a joke, and I'm enjoying every minute. On the other hand, the MSM bias towards AAR is not a joke.

The Stranger, Seattle's free weekly, offers a rather blah article about Randi Rhodes and Air America in "Sound and Fury". The author's a big fan of Randi, but the article isn't exactly ground-breaking in its insights. The discussion of the article here offers a bit more.

In the last week, I've heard her:As if that wasn't enough, back in April the same author posted "More on Randi Rhodes" (and I suppose you can read that title phonetically.)
1) shout down and interrupt and talk over people who call in if she thinks they're disagreeing with her (even if they're not);
2) slam illegal immigrants for depressing wages for "real Americans,"
...This person is no progressive. She's not even a liberal. She's the Rush Limbaugh of the Lieberman set. I'll be restricting my listening to Al and Janeane and, well, anyone else but Rhodes from now on. What a putz.
...Co-founded Pacifica Radio environmental news show Terra Verde with Pratap Chatterjee... Joined staff of Earth Island Journal... Joined staff of verde.com in 2000. Set up largest environmental journalism news staff in world history... Writing published in periodicals such as Counterpunch, Revolutionary Worker, San Francisco Examiner, East Bay Monthly, East Bay Express, Jidaijin, New Internationalist...Of course, on the upside, someone who has been published in those fine journals gives his stamp of approval to Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo.

The long wait is finally over, and you can see Randi Rhodes and David Brock (of the Soros-funded Media Matters) testifying before the Congressional media bias panel which was held last week.
The videos of Randi are linked to in this post, and those of Brock are linked from here.
But, wait, there's more! Videos of Joe Madison (who?) of the Black Eagle Radio Show (what?) are here.
I've provided a partial transcript below.

"...Well, it was just something we all did back in college. I really had no idea that the Russian Solidarity Friendship Union had questionable ties, but I'll take your word for it... No, really, at the meetings we just discussed things like Dostoevsky and worker's rights... I am not now nor have I ever been a member of Comsomol..."

I was dismayed last night when she talked over Sen. Boxer, interrupting her with her own comments and not letting Boxer get her point across in one piece. Boxer was good, agreed with Randi's points but I was unhappy that Randi talked so much. I really like Randi and think she adds a great deal to progressive talk radio, having been in the service and all. I want her to stay on the air. She has passion. I just wish she would listen more, especially when she has the opportunity to have our wonderful Barbara Boxer on the line.Speaking as a native New Yorker, 1000+ poster Eleny informs:
I feel that your analysis of her style as being a product of her being a New Yorker, to put it mildly and respectfully, has its flaws. And I choose not to give her a break this time around. There are times when she needs to get a grip and this is one of them.Someone with just 21 posts who's obviously a FReeper disruptor chimes in:
I can't stand that loud mouth. She is the embodiment of annoying egotistical loudmouth know it alls' everywhere. She's completely obnoxious. I like Air America and really like Al Franken, but after trying to listen to Randi Rhodes about a dozen times, I came to the conclusion that I hate her and her show. She makes discussion points that are so trite and meaningless it makes my head want to pop off. I was listening to her talking about G Bush wanting Osama's head chopped off, and she dedicated half her show to that. There are millions of Democrats and Independents out there thinking "good", F#$@ Osama. I personally hope he is burned alive. Our last comment comes from ladylib:
I appreciate Randi because she's incredibly knowledgeable, but jeez Louise, she will NOT shut up! She verbally mows over everybody in her path and it doesn't matter if they're right, left, or center. Hey Randi, try LISTENING to your listeners. You might learn something from them. And, no Randi, I do not want to hear "bounce your boobies" again. It was embarrassing and stupid the first time. You mean the bumper music she used for the Boxer appearance?

Randi Rhodes is going to Washington! She'll be at the Congressional media bias panel on Tuesday May 24. Others attending include Al Franken and David Brock. They'll probably be discussing how to make the media more balanced.
The event - dubbed "Karl Rove's Big Day of Discrediting" by VRWC insiders - will be discussed live on Franken's show. And, as the graphic shows, you can then tune into Randi's show for compete analysis.
Typo or Freudian Slip, you decide. While many people were listed as invited to the confab in the press release, Randi was not. One can almost hear her muttering, "Al, Al, Al!" under her breath as she created the graphic or shouted it to be created.

I've got other things to do, so I guess I'll have to miss Randi Rhodes' big interview with America's favorite pr0nographer, Larry Flynt. Apparently he's going to discuss allegations that John Bolton engaged in group sex. As to what bearing that has on his possible role with the U.N., well, I guess lucky listeners will find out. If you hear her show, please leave the wackiest quotes in the comments.
In the meantime, here are some charming Randi quotes from her show today:
[Sean Hannity] likes an American label on his rape rooms, his torture, and his mass graves."
"[Sen. Barbara Boxer] has bigger cojones than any man I've ever met in my life"

- Each one Franken, Schultz, Rhodes, etc., have something different to offer. Each one is extremely well informed and quite capable of dealing with the radical con-caller. I have learned something or have had my own opinions confirmed by each one of them.In other DUmmy news, they also discuss the Counterpunch article "Al Franken is a Big Fat Phony" in "Is Al Franken a supporter of the DLC and its position on the Iraq War?"
- At first, I had all sorts of middling feelings about her. I came to understand that she is probably the most ethical, intelligent person on the planet. She's brave, deep, and damned cool. Of all liberal hosts, I get the most hard information and solid opinion from her. The front is just a front. She's it. She and Barbara Boxer. And Mike Malloy. I love these people.
- She would have made a great teacher, but I am very glad to call her a spokesperson for my causes and values.
- Don't care for her. I think she's rude and crass.
I know some Dems would prefer to hear a ladylike NPR type calmly discussing the latest solar energy initiative. But this country is in big trouble, and somebody has to point that out LOUD and clear.

Drudge describes Air America's latest attempt at publicity: a "humorous" skit involving gun shots and a guy with a fake American accent talking about social security.
I believe nothing will happen concerning this for at least two reasons: it will be determined that there is no credible threat, and only "liberals" can do the sustained outrage bit.
If everything was reversed, you could expect 24/7 coverage from the major networks, 100,000 word pieces about this in the NYT, the mass signing of petitions, boycotts, protests, marches, T-shirts, ad infinitum. But, since the target is (putatively) conservative, expect this issue to be over with this week.
UPDATE: On today's show, she apologized for any misunderstanding.
She also taunted Drudge with "come out, come out wherever you are". Gay-baiting someone who says he's straight and was almost married?
In today's visual news, Randi says she doesn't have a computer at home and she was on the pot when she heard the news over the phone.
Also: "I'm so non-violent it's unbelievable"
She blames the segment on New York: it was written and put together in NYC. However, she takes full respon for items that appear on her show. She claims she only heard the end of the bit and she says that the bit was not funny from what she heard.
Now she wants to know who told drudge about the investigation.
Developing...

A Public Advocate fundraising letter posted on a left-wing blog site was read on Air America today [by Randi Rhodes --LW]. The liberal radio network insinuated that the letter was sent to the Terri Schindler Schiavo donor list by Public Advocate--an accusation that is completely false.
Public Advocate of the United States, a national pro-family group based out of northern Virginia, has supported Terri and her parents during her long fought unsuccessful fight for her life, however the group has never and has no future plans to mail to any of her donors.
"While we are honored to be attacked by the left-wing extremists at Air America, we wish they would get the facts straight..."

Sorry, I read the title wrong: "Randi Rhodes is hinting she believes in LIHOP."
For those not in on the loop, LIHOP stands from "Let It Happen On Purpose."
laura888: I'm amazed and scared for her...
mopinko: said it outright. a caller said it, and she said, yup, i think so too...
Laurab: There was a time I would have thought all of you were loony. Not anymore. Add me to the (at least) LIHOP, believers. After a few years of *co and their evilness, I put nothing past them...
See also "Here's what Randi Rhodes isn't saying on AAR re: 9/11 and NORAD":
(This is above ground in the mainstream media: Associated Press, Toronto Star, Aviation Weekly, BBC, etc. I suspect she is trying to establish the beginning of this story without going deeper before Americans can handle it...I hope. I've sent this to both her and Al Franken.)

"Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy Are Under Attack":
The past few days Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy have been hit with tons of phone calls from rabid Bushites, much more than normal. I have to wonder if we are hitting some sort of turning point. With the onslaught of stories finally making it to the MSM (Dr. Rice's lies being exposed, the 37 soldiers killed, the ever-rising budget deficit, etc. etc.), it seems like the Bush supporters are feeling "boxed in" and are trying to make themselves feel better by going on the attack. Perhaps the tide is finally about to turn?
"Is Randi Rhodes being Freeped?"
Every other caller seems to be some Right Wingnut screamer.
I think there is some sort of plan to bombard her phone lines today.
Notes to members #342, #9432, and #103229: begin plan Shortcakes. I repeat, Shortcakes. End transmission.

Randi Rhodes explains the radio term "rack," which refers to the tapes that hold radio commercials or sound effects, or to the skill DJs have to have to quickly switch from one commercial or sound effect to another.

This is a second-hand report by a listener to South Florida's Steve Kane Show. I couldn't find anything at the second link about this, so apparently it's radio-only:
I just heard Brian Craig (and Steve Kane) discussing the incredible humiliation of Randi Rhodes at the Democrat Convention yesterday. What happened was that some political comedian on the air invited Randi to walk among the delegates on the floor. Randi replied that she wasn't allowed on the floor and had to stay in the upper reaches of the hall. Brian and Steve were speculating as to whether Randi's floor pass was lifted by either a VERY JEALOUS Al Franken or nervous Democrats.
BTW, it was also mentioned that Randi is NOT allowed in the studio anytime Al Franken is there. Plus she is NOT allowed to talk to any of Franken's guests even off the air. Apparently Al Franken has some major JEALOUSY problems concerning Randi Rhodes. I do remember when Air America first went on the air, the reviews for Franken were horrible but they also said that Randi was INTERESTING even though she is s WHACKO.
I don't know what they could be worried about... [Am I telegraphing this enough?] There are no Christmas trees at this year's convention.

...given her penchant for spewing forth [phwoar --LW] -- on air and off -- it comes as no surprise she's not particularly beloved by some folks in the South Florida radio community. From the largely complimentary Palm Beach Post story "Rhodes' rage retains fury on new national stage left". Randi apparently hates the PBP; apparently they're trying to woo her back.
"She is just low-class," says Linda Marx, widow of the late WJNO talk-show host Jack Cole.
Marx recalls an incident at a Christmas bash the couple threw in 1999, when an inebriated Rhodes squatted over the Christmas tree as a party antic. Rhodes admits she had a few martinis, but insists she didn't urinate.
"I pretended," she says.
Marx indicates otherwise. "I'm just happy the tree was on tile and not carpet," she says...
[...non-pee-related sections follow...]
"She's very self-destructive," says Bill Newgent, Rhodes' first producer at WJNO, who adds that, after a few months of working with her, "I went to management and said, 'She's nuts. I can't do this.' "
"I said I would never come back to New York unless I could live in Manhattan. I wanted to come back like a real New Yorker. I didn't want to be from the provinces anymore," she says.
The point was driven home when Rhodes showed up for her first day of work and realized that the building is where she worked as an office temp, long before she began a career in radio that would take her to Texas, Alabama, Wisconsin and South Florida (she started at Miami's WIOD-AM 610, before moving to WJNO in 1994). "When I saw the view of the Chrysler building, I nearly burst into tears," she says...

"When I turn my head this way, I look like someone you'd like to get to know. I'd entertain you with my sparkling conversation and quick wit."

"But, then I'd turn my head this way, and you knew I was about to say something both caustic and really way far out there."
Sure, I realize some people dislike her accent. I, for one, don't. I don't find her all that difficult to listen to. The problem is not the way she speaks, it's the wacky things she says.
One of Air America's listeners - I forget who, but it shouldn't be hard to find out which one - said Randi was complaining about, er, "not getting any." The Lonewacko Blog could help in that capacity.
What about you? What is your opinion of Randi? Let's have a poll!
Posted at 10:38 PM | Comments (3)
Is Randi leaving Air America, or, as the eighth comment here says, was it all just a jolly jape? I guess we'll have to wait for Tuesday to find out.
As pointed out at the first link, AA's ratings in NYC aren't that good: they're at #24. Their current ratings are barely above when the same station hosted Jamaican Talk.

Randi is accusing the Bush Administration of murder for their perceived lack of response to terrorism prior to 9/11.
She's also attempting to say that Condi's attempt to differentiate between strategic and tactical responses to terrorist acts amounts to doing nothing. Here's the relevant excerpt from Rice's testimony:
I would like to think that we might have come to an effective response [to another Cole-type attack]. I think that in the context of war, when you're at war with somebody, it's not an issue of every battle or every skirmish; it's an issue of, can you do strategic damage to this organization? And we were thinking much more along the lines of strategic damage.
UPDATE: I edited the first paragraph to make clear the context of the accusation.
